  • A World-Renowned Centre for Biomedical Research

Space for your organisation Indicative image of the proposed new MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is already home to one of the most productive concentrations of biomedical scientific research in the world. In combining a first-rate research university medical centre with a range of world-famous basic science institutes and the internationally famous UK-NHS hospital on a single, manageable site, the Campus provides opportunities offered by very few biomedical centres in the world. This centre of innovation and excellence will now double in size while maintaining its focus on progressive biomedical science.

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is well-positioned for easy international travel. Stansted Airport is the site's nearest major airport and connects to over 160 European destinations. Trains to London King's Cross St Pancras take less than an hour, with onward connections to Europe via Eurostar. Importantly for many occupiers, the Campus is exceptionally well connected to fibre optic networks such as Dante and Géant which make global academic research collaboration even easier.

The UK, with its large, well-integrated and
research-friendly National Health Service, is a stable
and cost-effective place to conduct biomedical research.

Excellent governance processes and well-developed national research networks create an environment which facilitates effective biomedical research.  The benefits of this nationally supportive context are magnified at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, where the collaborative work of organisations at the Campus allows accelerated translation of scientific advances into beneficial treatments.

In addition to Cambridge University and the Cambridge University Hospitals, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus is the home of several research institutes of national importance including the Nutrition, Molecular Biology and Epidemiology bodies of Medical Research Council. The cardiothoracic Papworth Hospital has publicly announced its intention to relocate to the Biomedical Campus and will be a catalyst to substantial growth in cardiovascular research and clinical activity on the Campus.

  • The Largest High-tech and Biotech Cluster in Europe

Space for your organisation The East of England is Europe's most productive biotech cluster and the Campus is highly respected at regional level as both a healthcare and clinical research centre. The on-site Cambridge University Hospitals (Addenbrooke's and the Rosie Maternity Hospital) provide all acute services to people from the Cambridge area and a range of specialist services to patients from the wider region. These hospitals co-operate with several other regional hospitals, notably the specialist cardiothoracic Papworth Hospital which is soon to move to the Campus.

As well as providing the business facilities and specialist technical networks required by ambitious organisations, the region is known as one of the most attractive places to live and
    work in the UK.

The Cambridge area attracts more investment per capita than any other area in Europe.

The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is a world-class centre of excellence in biomedical related research, patient care and education.

The current occupiers including Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute, the Hutchison/MRC Research Centre, the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine employ over 7000 people.

    In 1999,
Cambridge University Hospitals, together with major partners the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council, created a masterplan for the expansion of the hospital site called the “2020 Vision”. This included the development of a further 70 acres to support and enhance existing on-site activities and to create space for new opportunities.  On completion, the expanded site, named the “Cambridge Biomedical Campus”, will be home to one of the largest and most internationally competitive concentrations of healthcare-related talent and enterprise in Europe.

Biomedical research in Cambridge is underpinned by a unique tradition of atomic and molecular science. The close proximity of the Cambridge Biomedical Campus to experts in this field benefits occupiers with a molecular interest and as a result there is strong interest in the Biomedical Campus from occupiers with a molecular focus.

The Medical Research Council continues to show its commitment to Cambridge and the Biomedical Campus by building its new state-of-the-art research centre here. The new building will replace the world-famous Medical Research Council Laboratory whose staff won an astonishing eight Nobel Prizes since the institution moved to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in 1962. Occupiers will also benefit from the University's ‘The Physics of Medicine Initiative’ through which researchers from this and other disciplines are encouraged to mix and share ideas at the interface of the physical sciences, life sciences and clinical sciences.
